THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
Dynasty finished last season (1988-1989) at 57. Its numbers had been dwindling since the ill-fated Moldavia Massacre. After Linda Evans’ departure last season, it seemed as if the show had run its course. It seemed only natural to cancel the series. However, Dynasty ended with its usual season-ending cliffhanger. Die-hard Dynasty fans were left wondering what would happen to their favorite Dynasty characters. Collins’ Alexis was literally left hanging in the air.After the cancellation announcement, Dynasty die-hards began a massive letter-writing campaign. ABC offices were flooded with letters and postcards, while phone-lines were jammed during the business day. Dynasty’s fans were in hot demand, appearing on every talk show around.Finally, ABC gave in and Dynasty returned in the fall with a tenth season. As with any soap, there were some changes, though. John Forsythe returned as Blake Carrington, along with John James (Jeff Colby), Gordon Thomson (Adam Carrington), Heather Locklear (Sammy Jo), Tracy Scoggins (Monica), and Stephanie Beacham (Sable). Joan Collins was limited to cameo appearances this season as her character Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan retires. Michael Nader (Dex) left the series after a few episodes. Lauren Hutton joined the series as a former flame of Blake Carrington. Emma Samms and Jack Coleman were unable to reprise their roles as Fallon and Steven, so the originators of the roles returned, Pamela Sue Martin and Al Corley.
