Why Dynasty?

I was just four-years-old when Dynasty debuted. It was my mother’s favorite prime-time drama (Days of our Lives being her favorite daytime soap). It was a Wednesday night (and later Thursday with its spinoff The Colbys, and later time change) in our home. Just as I was forbidden to speak during the hour Days of our Lives was broadcast during the day, so was the hour Dynasty ruled. I still have old VHS tapes of my mother’s featuring original broadcasts. However, my love affair with the Carrington saga didn’t really take place until the year I came out of the closet (one would think with their own Steven Carrington my parents would have been more tolerable!). Like Alexis, I was exiled. I spent a year in Europe, my homeland of Italy (I was born in Rome), and there I discovered the Italian-dubbed version of a childhood memory. Steven Carrington became my hero. I could understand him, emphasize with him. Al Corley was not only good looking, but he could act – not only through words written for him, but with his expressions.

I was now hooked on the series. After my return to the States, I began collecting everything. I spent time in libraries collecting every printed source on the show I could find. I haunted E-bay for memorabilia. I frequented message boards. I collected and saved fan fiction, fan comments, etc. I collected all the TV episodes and even books, TV shows, movies, etc. that resembled the Carrington saga. This grew into a huge library.

Dynasty fan fiction began with Andy Koenig. She wrote pages of fiction and nonfiction, and is well-respected. Eventually, some of her work evolved into the monthly Dynasty the Next Generation. She left the series early on but many other writers joined in. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a regular fix of Dynasty. Blood and Oil followed. It was better written but was sporadic to say the least. Russ Taylor, my partner at the time got me hooked on fan fiction. He encouraged me to write some of my own. I wrote a couple or three pieces. One was a short story that connected the original series with the reunion. We actually considered writing for TNG and submitted samples (the original submission was a stand alone piece featuring what would happen if Alexis met a certain Texan oilman). While accepted, the feud between TNG and B&O and their own respective writers was too much for us. We always tried to avoid conflict. So, we retired from any more writing until TNG folded without a resolution. We approached TNG’s “executive producer” Yaniv Shalmberg about picking up where the series ended and not leaving readers hanging as the original series had done with its fans. So, we gathered up some writers but alas, it never came about either. Russ and I did manage to outline the rest of TNG’s fifth season and published some of them as “mini-episodes” at the site’s message board.

And things stayed that way until I found the SON blogs. I liked how some fans had made their own blogs presenting their stories based upon various soaps, or all-new soaps. I decided to take my mini-episodes – more of an episode guide than anything else – and publish it. What if Dynasty HAD continued? What would have happened? What would it have looked like? So, I wanted to turn the clock back to 1989 and answer those questions. Since I was preparing to write TNG with Russ, the fictional 10th season of Dynasty also follows TNG continuity. Thus, the reunion material and most notably, Dex Dexter’s disappearance are used. However, in my fictional interim seasons, I tried to follow closely what happened during that time frame, to the news reports, rumors, etc. Unlike some fiction which is more or less fans’ wish fulfillment, I stuck closer to the events of the time. So, there is no Alexis, no Krystle. On the other hand, this is a fiction within a fiction, and when the ratings fail, it’s time to bring Alexis and Krystle back.

Dynasty the Sequel, as I called it, met with success. During the week, I published seasons 10-12, and weekends were filled with special features and the 5th season of TNG. Complaints were minimal, but compliments were many. However, the death of my father put things on hold for a while. I had a new writing partner, Randy Mullins, but problems in Randy’s personal life meant things were on definite hold.

I really wanted to bring the Sequel back. Should I continue where I left off, or start fresh? I finally decided to relaunch the fiction. I’d start all over, make a few corrections and maybe some changes. And what better date to start over with than …

So, here again – from the beginning – is season 10, to be followed by 11 and 12. There are new and revised graphics. Stories are edited. More attention to detail. I hope you enjoy this new version.

What’s next?

TNG will continue. This will truly be the next generation of Dynasty as the septor is passed to a new generation. After all, that is what a Dynasty does. LB, Danny, Lauren and Krystina are the new faces. Blake, Krystle and Alexis are still around but limited in their stories, and gradually being phased out. Dex, Ben and Sable are still around.
Seasons 13-15 promises more stories with the original cast.

Special features include … Season 0 (what happened BEFORE the series), Season 3 of The Colbys, and a possible mini-series set during the 50s, the Early Years, so to speak.

I hope you’ll stick with me. The Carrington saga continues.

Jay!

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

Dynasty finished last season (1988-1989) at 57. Its numbers had been dwindling since the ill-fated Moldavia Massacre. After Linda Evans’ departure last season, it seemed as if the show had run its course. It seemed only natural to cancel the series. However, Dynasty ended with its usual season-ending cliffhanger. Die-hard Dynasty fans were left wondering what would happen to their favorite Dynasty characters. Collins’ Alexis was literally left hanging in the air. After the cancellation announcement, Dynasty die-hards began a massive letter-writing campaign. ABC offices were flooded with letters and postcards, while phone-lines were jammed during the business day. Dynasty’s fans were in hot demand, appearing on every talk show around. Finally, ABC gave in and Dynasty returned in the fall with a tenth season. As with any soap, there were some changes, though. John Forsythe returned as Blake Carrington, along with John James (Jeff Colby), Gordon Thomson (Adam Carrington), Heather Locklear (Sammy Jo), Tracy Scoggins (Monica), and Stephanie Beacham (Sable). Joan Collins was limited to cameo appearances this season as her character Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan retires. Michael Nader (Dex) left the series after a few episodes. Lauren Hutton joined the series as a former flame of Blake Carrington. Emma Samms and Jack Coleman were unable to reprise their roles as Fallon and Steven, so the originators of the roles returned, Pamela Sue Martin and Al Corley. Others followed. The saga of the Carringtons continues ...
