Billy Bob Thorton as Freddy Krueger in New 'Nightmare on Elm Street'
by Laura Gosselin | August 13th, 2008

Billy Bob Thorton is the new melted face of Freddy Krueger. (Focus Image)

Billy Bob Thorton has been cast as the diabolically scary kiddie killer Freddy Krueger, who aside from Jaws, might have been the scariest movie villain of all time.

Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street scared the crap out of teenagers across America when a serial killer who appeared only in the dreams of the characters, brutally slashed them to death in reality.

The original Freddy, Robert Englund, says Billy Bob is an "excellent choice" and, "A big budget should mean the film will look a lot better than some of the old movies."

I couldnt disagree more.

and this is coming froma huge freddy fan, i mean srsly.. you should see my room. the figured, dolls, cardboard cutout, box sets, talking heads, posters.. etc...

They want and *need* to take Nightmare in a new direction. Robert was amazing as freddy - i lvoe that man, i do - but... From what i know about this film its supsoed to come off very dark scary and real. Robert has always played Freddy campy and OTT and it has worked because that was the direction. Sure he can play a dark scary freddy (New Nightmare!) but he will always be thought of as that 'welcome to primetime bitch!' freddy that slams a girls head through a tv.

new movie, new direction, new freddy.

i am shocked how ok i am with this.. IF ITS TRUE. and i hope it is. i mean.. Slingblade! come on!!

Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) will play the new Freddy Krueger in New Line Cinema's A Nightmare on Elm Street, scheduled for an April 16, 2010 release. The role was originally played by Robert Englund.

Samuel Bayer is directing the relaunch, which was written by Wesley Strick. The movie starts filming on May 5 in Chicago.

The Haunting in Connecticut star Kyle Gallner has been cast as Quentin in the film as well.

Platinum Dunes' Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing. John Rickard is co-producing.

"Looking at his performance in 'Watchmen,' here’s a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him," Bayer told The Hollywood Reporter. "And in 'Nightmare,' he is going to be under prosthetic make-up. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character."

OMG, this is beyong exciting. Haley is an amazing actor, so good in "watchmen". Now he is playing freddy, if anyone can make Freddy his own, its Jackie Earle Haley. He is perfect for the role, believe me when I say this, HE IS PERFECT...Trust me, this film just scored another notch for me.

I read the script(Downloaded it),someone leaked it out the internet, Kristen is alot like Tina from the original but she has more depth then Tina did. Kristen and Nancey are very likeable characters especially Kristen, unlike Tina...Kristen is a big part of the film...she is in the first 40 minutes of the movie. She is killed the same way Tina is in the original.

I already love Kristen by just reading the script. This remake will be thousands times better then the original and the remake of friday the 13th.

Now who is playing the teen characters? Kristen and Nancey

These are the main TEENS including Freddy

[FREDDY KRUEGER] (40s) The fedora-wearing villain of children’s nightmares. He'’s taunting and vindictive. He's the last person you want to see in your dreams...

[KRISTEN--(KRIS)] 18, attractive, hot, sexy and confident. She’s smart and curious. She's also the type of girl who has to figure things out when they don't make sense...

[QUENTIN] (18) Mysterious, smart and cool. Think indie type guy. He runs the school podcast, “Insomnia Radio”. Think Johnny Depp...

[NANCY] (18) Attractive, interesting, and intriguing. Very smart. Not terribly social. There’s one in every class. The pretty-girl image is not her priority. Getting out of town after graduation is...

[DEAN] (18) He's the school jock. Attractive. He'’s the kid that lives in the two-story home on the street that screams “Rich Suburbia.” He’s the guy that everyone seems to love...

[JESSE] (18) – Alpha male. Cool, attractive. He used to date Kris, and he’s still trying to get back together – even though they’ve broken up about 4 times already...

After getting an Oscar nomination, iconic roles seem to fall into your lap. I'm happy for Jackie! He's got big shoes to fill, hopefully he can do it justice. As well as the writer/directer/producer.

I read the script already and believe me, who ever is sciptical of this movie, don't be. It is amazing.

Kristen is like Tina from the original but she has more depth and has a bigger part. She is in the first 40 minute of the film.

It sounds like he will do a great job in the remake but I wonder if they are trying to take Freddy in a different direction. The person says you are going to feel empathy for Freddy. I never thought of Freddy as some horror movie villain to feel empathy for (I felt empathy for Jason Voorhees, not because we share the same first name, but because he drowned and the camp counselors allowed it to happen by not paying attention) but maybe they will write the script in a way where one can empathize (sp?) with the character.

I cannot wait to see this film! :)

I could be wrong, but i believe that they are playing with the backstory. something i dont mind at all, shockingly as im a HUGE fan of the original.

From what i heard they are going to have Freddy have burned alive by the parents of the town for being a child molester -- like in the original -- however as it turns out, he really was not one. he was innocent.

but i dont know if its true, i heard it MONTHS ago when the concept was to reboot freddy, not so much remake it. And the first movie was really gonna be about who he was and how he became theis dream figure and use nancy and her friends from the first movie as pretty much the way to reintrouce him.

but then i heard it was gonna be a remake of pretty much th first movie. idk, i would much rather a different reboot than a direct remake myself.

It is a remake/prequel...it takes place in modern time. I read the script.

It is a remake of the series, has alot of stuff that made the original great but it is in a different way

Terry, I edited this post because you had put spoilers in it from a script you read. Could you please not do that in the future?

Thanks.

Roman.

I would rather they not retcon that kind of history and, instead, have him remain as the child molestor but say that his parents abused him so badly that it led him to a life of crime in the most despicable way.

Degrassi star Nina Dobrev have been cast for the lead role of 'Nancy Thompson' in Platinum Dunes’ A Nightmare on Elm Street remake. In addition, filming is scheduled at Barrington High School, just north of Chicago. She will be joining Jackie Earle Haley, who was the first one cast for the movie as Freddy Krueger and Kyle Gallner who was announced to play Quentin.

Uh yes it is, I belong to a very very reliable horror sight and they announced this. Though it will be made officially early next week by Brad Fuller.
