I grew up on country music, and I think everyone knows how that has recently gone all to crap. Well, "recently" within the last decade. (Though I still love Joe Nichols, who has that old country vibe, and Brad Paisley, as long as he isn't singing about ticks.)
However, a couple of years ago (on the wonder of social networking that is MySpace), I "met" a musician by the name of Levi Weaver. He is an amazing musician and more importantly (in my book) lyricist. He found a fan in Imogen Heap (also worth checking out), who invited him along on her tour of the US and Canada after he was selected to open for her show in Birmingham, England. In the beginning of this year, he released his first full-length album "You Are Never Close to Home, You Are Never Far From Home" and I think it is a masterpiece. He's doing this whole musician thing on his own (starving artist and all) and is currently touring the West Coast all by himself, booking shows and driving around. You can check out his music here (www.leviweaver.com), here (www.myspace.com/leviweaver), here (http://www.thesixtyone.com/leviweaver/), and purchase his music on cdbaby.com or iTunes.
I have to also credit Levi with opening me up to quite a bit of the music I listen to now, including:
Ryan Adams
Josh Ritter
Sondre Lerche
Matisyahu...etc.
I also enjoy:
Anna Nalick
A Fine Frenzy
All the great rock (Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, Guns N Roses, and so on)
My favorite artist (not counting Levi, I should probably say...) is Derek Webb. I first became a fan of his when he was with his former band Caedmon's Call (which he is currently touring with as he collaborated on their last album), and then I have enjoyed him even more as he has branched out on his own. His most recent work, which has met with great reviews, is an EP he did with his wife (fellow singer/songwriter) Sandra McCracken. Their EP, Ampersand, can be heard (and/or purchased) here: http://www.ampersandep.com/
My most recent music download was the soundtrack from the movie "Once" -- I enjoyed the film, which is about two strangers who meet and make a CD together, and so, obviously the music was central to the plot. I have been enjoying listening to that as well.
I'm forgetting things, but this is a pretty solid introduction to my music library!
